Signs You Need A/C Repair
No one wants to deal with a malfunctioning air conditioner, especially during peak summer months. Catching issues early can prevent bigger problems and costly repairs down the road. If you notice any of the following signs, it’s time to call us for prompt AC service:
Strange Noises or Odours
Unusual sounds or unpleasant smells coming from your AC may indicate mechanical or electrical issues that need professional attention.
Uneven Cooling
If some rooms in your home feel warmer or cooler than others, it could signal airflow problems or a struggling AC unit.
Unexplained Increase in Energy Bills
A sudden rise in your electricity costs without any change in usage may point to an inefficient or overworked system.
Warm Air from Vents
When your AC is running but blowing warm air, it’s a strong sign that something isn’t working properly.
No Airflow
If there’s little to no air coming from your vents, there could be a serious blockage or system failure that requires immediate repair.
Refrigerant Leaks
Puddles around the unit or a hissing noise may be signs of a refrigerant leak; a critical issue that should be addressed right away.
A/C Troubleshooting Tips
Inside the Home
- Thermostat Settings
Ensure the thermostat is set to cool. - Thermostat Batteries
Replace batteries if they’re over a year old or the display is unresponsive. - Furnace Power Switch
Confirm the furnace switch is on. It looks like a regular light switch and is typically located high on the wall near the basement stairs or furnace room door. - Furnace Filter
Replace or clean the filter if it’s older than one month. - Fan Operation Check
Turn off the HRV and set the thermostat fan to auto. If the furnace fan is running, it indicates the thermostat is calling for A/C. - Breaker Panel
Verify the A/C breaker (usually a double breaker labeled “A/C”) is turned on. - Water Leaks
If water is leaking from the furnace, the unit may be frozen. Turn off the system for 24 hours to allow it to thaw. - Frozen Pipes or Ductwork
If there’s visible ice, thaw the unit for 24–48 hours before booking a service call. Frozen units cannot be properly diagnosed. - Enercare Equipment
If your system is rented from Enercare, contact them directly for service.

Outside the Home
- A/C Cover
Make sure the outdoor cover is fully removed. - Disconnect Box
Ensure the outdoor disconnect switch (a grey box with a plug or handle) is turned on. - Ice on Unit
If there’s ice on the unit or pipes, allow 24–48 hours for thawing before requesting service. - Dirty or Clogged Fins
If the fins are dirty, turn off power at the breaker panel, then gently rinse with a hose (never use a pressure washer). - Outdoor Temperature
The outdoor temperature must be above 18°C for accurate diagnostics.
When Is It Time to Replace Your AC Unit?
Not sure whether to repair or replace your AC unit? We’re here to help you make the right decision. Below are key signs that it might be time to upgrade your system:
01 Age of the Unit
Most air conditioners last between 10 to 15 years. If your system is nearing or beyond this range, it’s likely time to consider a replacement.
02 Frequent Repairs
Are you constantly calling for AC repairs? If breakdowns are becoming common, replacing your unit may be more cost-effective in the long run.
03 Higher Energy Bills
A steady rise in energy costs may indicate your AC is losing efficiency. Older systems tend to work harder and consume more energy to maintain comfort.
04 Inconsistent Cooling
Uneven temperatures throughout your home could mean your current system is struggling to keep up and can no longer cool effectively.
05 Unusual or Excessive Noise
Loud or strange noises from your AC may signal serious internal issues. In some cases, replacement is more economical than costly repairs.
06 Use of R-22 Refrigerant (Freon)
If your unit still runs on R-22, it’s time for an upgrade. R-22 has been banned due to environmental concerns, making refills expensive and unsustainable.
