How the Home Efficiency Rebate (HER) Works:

1. Complete the Initial Home Energy Assessment

To validate your project and claim your rebate, an energy assessment is required, which costs up to $600. Schedule your first assessment with an Enbridge Gas-approved service organization before starting any upgrades. A certified energy advisor will evaluate your home and recommend energy-efficient improvements.

2. Receive Your Detailed Report

After the evaluation, the energy advisor will provide a comprehensive report detailing energy-saving upgrades tailored to your home.

3. Complete a Minimum of Two Qualifying Upgrades

To qualify, you must install at least two upgrades. Count on CK Mechanical for your heat pump installation!

4. Schedule a Follow-Up Energy Assessment

After installation, you’ll need a follow-up assessment within 120 days of the initial evaluation or by December 31, 2025 – whichever comes first.

5. Receive Your Rebates

Rebate cheques will begin to be issued in January 2025, including the initial $600 for the energy assessments.

Home Efficiency Rebate Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to complete two upgrades?

Your home operates as a system where various components interact. To effectively enhance energy efficiency, it’s essential to install at least two upgrades. Your energy advisor will guide you on which upgrades are necessary. Note: A minimum of three new windows must be installed to count as an upgrade.

What is a home energy assessment, and how long does it take?

A home energy assessment evaluates your home’s energy usage and recommends efficiency upgrades. The initial assessment typically takes about two hours, while the follow-up lasts about one hour.

Can I apply for the Canada Greener Homes Loan through Enbridge Gas?

The Canada Greener Homes Loan is a separate program from HER. Ontario residents can apply through the Canada Greener Homes Loan portal.

How long do I have to complete my follow-up home energy assessment?

You must complete the follow-up within 120 days of the initial assessment or by December 31, 2025.

Note: For initial assessments conducted on or after February 6, 2024, and before July 15, 2024, the follow-up must be completed within 120 days from July 15, 2024.

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is a highly efficient system that provides both heating and cooling for your home. Unlike traditional systems that generate hot or cold air, a heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air and transfers it indoors. In the warmer months, it reverses this process to cool your home.

What is a heat pump water heater?

A heat pump water heater works similarly to a heat pump but is specifically designed to heat water. It takes heat from the surrounding air and transfers it to the water, making it an energy-efficient alternative to conventional water heaters. These systems can significantly decrease energy usage and lower your utility bills while providing consistent hot water for your home.

Ducted vs. Ductless Heat Pump Systems

There are two main types of heat pump models: ducted and ductless. Your choice will depend on various factors.

Ducted Heat Pumps

These require ductwork and are best suited for homes with existing duct systems. An outdoor unit connects to an indoor unit, distributing warm or cool air throughout the house via ducts.

Ductless Heat Pumps

Ductless heat pumps do not use ductwork. Instead, they employ mounted air handler units placed strategically around your home. This option offers flexible installation and zoned climate control.
