Heat Pump FAQs

What conditions does Goodman's limited warranty cover?

Goodman brand limited warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship that appear under normal use and maintenance.

What problems does the limited warranty not cover?

The limited warranty does not cover:

  • Damage or repairs caused by faulty installation or application.
  • Damage due to floods, fires, lightning, accidents, corrosive environments, or other uncontrollable conditions.
  • Repairs required due to use of incompatible components or accessories.
  • Normal maintenance, such as coil and filter cleaning or replacement, and lubrication.
  • Parts or accessories not supplied or approved by the manufacturer.
  • Issues resulting from improper use, maintenance, operation, or servicing.
  • Damage from power interruptions or inadequate electrical service.
  • Damage from frozen or broken water pipes due to equipment failure.
  • Cosmetic changes in appearance that don’t affect performance.
  • Replacement of fuses or resetting of circuit breakers.
  • Use of unapproved refrigerant types or recycled refrigerants.

If the temperature falls below freezing, should I manually turn ON my thermostat’s emergency or auxiliary heat switch?

Not necessarily. If your home remains comfortable, there’s no need to manually activate the auxiliary or emergency heat. The system will automatically use auxiliary heat when needed to meet your set temperature. If you frequently feel cold, contact CK Mechanical for a consultation.

Is it normal for my heat pump to have frost on it?

Yes. During cold weather, it’s normal for the outside of your heat pump to develop a light coating of frost or ice. The system’s defrost control will automatically activate a defrost cycle to melt the frost, and the auxiliary heat will warm your home during this time.

However, if you notice a thick or heavy layer of ice, contact CK Mechanical. This may indicate your heat pump needs servicing.

What’s the difference between SEER and HSPF on a heat pump?

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures cooling efficiency, while HSPF (Heating Season Performance Factor) measures heating efficiency. The higher the SEER and HSPF ratings, the more energy-efficient the heat pump is in both heating and cooling modes.

When do I need to schedule maintenance for my heat pump?

Because your heat pump operates year-round, it’s best to schedule maintenance twice a year:

  • A cooling checkup in the spring
  • A heating service call in the fall

Seasonal maintenance helps prevent unexpected breakdowns and extends the lifespan of your system.
