Wondering if it’s time to replace your old furnace? Here are the key signs it’s time for an upgrade:
Furnace Age
Most furnaces last 10 to 15 years. If yours is within or past this age range, it’s probably time to think about upgrading. If you’ve just moved in and aren’t sure of its age, check the manual or model number to find out.
Constant Cycling
If your furnace is running longer than usual or constantly cycling on and off, it could be a sign of a bigger issue. While clogged filters can cause this, clean filters with the same problem might mean there’s a failed or damaged component inside.
Rust & Corrosion
Visible rust or corrosion on the outside of your furnace can indicate internal damage. If you notice rust outside, there’s likely corrosion inside the unit as well, which can cause serious problems down the line.
Unusual Noises
Strange sounds like banging, popping, or hissing often indicate that parts inside the furnace are worn out. If you hear any odd noises, shut off the unit and contact a technician. These sounds could indicate that it’s time to replace the furnace, especially if it’s out of warranty.
Decreased Efficiency
The technology in your old furnace simply can’t compare to newer high-efficiency models. If your utility bills are rising exponentially, it’s likely your furnace is losing efficiency. Older units with worn-out components can also cause your furnace to run longer to heat your home, resulting in higher energy costs.
