When Should I Replace My Ductless Mini Split?

Are you thinking about a ductless mini split but unsure of its lifespan? Or maybe you already have one and are wondering if it’s time for an upgrade? Ductless mini splits are an excellent HVAC system that allow for zoned comfort and other benefits. But, like any appliance, they eventually need to be replaced. This guide will help you identify the signs that your ductless mini split is nearing the end of its lifespan and when you should replace it.

How Long Does a Mini-Split Last?

With proper care, a ductless mini split system can last, on average, around 10 to 15 years. They can actually last longer than some other HVAC systems.

There are a few things that can affect the lifespan of your ductless mini split system:

  • The quality of the equipment you choose
  • How well you maintain it
  • How you use it

It May Be Time to Replace Your Ductless Mini-Split If…

1. It’s Old

Ductless mini-split systems typically last 10-15 years or more with proper maintenance. If your system is approaching or beyond this age, consider a replacement. Older systems become less efficient and reliable.

2. It Breaks Down Frequently

Constant breakdowns signal the end of your mini-split’s life. Frequent repairs become expensive, and at a certain point, more than a replacement would cost. One of our qualified HVAC technicians can advise you if a replacement is best.

3. Energy Costs Are Increasing Significantly

A less efficient system struggles to cool or heat your home, leading to rising energy bills. This could be caused by  a number of potential issues, including dirty evaporator coils, malfunctioning equipment, refrigerant leaks, improper sizing, etc. Either way, it could be time to replace your system.

4. It’s Making Strange Noises

A mini-split should be quiet. Unusual noises like rattling, grinding, or hissing indicate damage or wear. This could be caused by frozen/dirty coils, refrigerant leaks, loose parts, dirty filters, compressor overheating, or cheap materials. An HVAC contractor can troubleshoot the noise source and recommend repair or replacement.

5. It’s Leaking

Leaks from your mini-split system could be a refrigerant line leak, a serious issue that damages the compressor. Repairing a leak may not be cost-effective compared to replacement. Have a professional inspect the issue and help you determine if it’s time to replace your mini-split.

6. It’s Contributing to Poor Indoor Air Quality

Even though mini-splits don’t rely on air ducts, they have air filters that remove pollutants from your home. If your indoor air quality is suffering and replacing and cleaning filters doesn’t improve it, consult with us to discuss if it’s in need of replacement.

7. It Doesn’t Heat/Cool Consistently

If your mini-split struggles to maintain your desired temperature, it may be too old, too small, or have worn-out components. A new, more powerful system might be necessary for optimal comfort.
